Abstract
A hybrid vehicle drive system for a vehicle includes a first prime mover, a first prime mover driven transmission, and a rechargeable power source. The hybrid vehicle drive system further includes an interface between the transmission and the prime mover for coupling to an electric motor. The electric motor can be in direct or indirect mechanical communication with a hydraulic pump. The electric motor can receive power from the prime mover driven transmission through the interface.
Claims20
A method of using a vehicle with a vehicle drive system, the vehicle includes a first prime mover, an electric motor, a first rechargeable energy source, an accessory, and a prime mover driven transmission, the electric motor, the accessory, and the first rechargeable energy source being provided in a retrofit package, the method comprising:
- using the electric motor coupled to the PTO to charge the first rechargeable energy source;
- powering the accessory using the electric motor powered by the first rechargeable energy source when the vehicle is stopped;
- monitoring for an antilock brake condition;
- and
- adjusting power to the electric motor from the prime mover driven transmission in event of an antilock braking condition.
A vehicle power drive system comprising:
- an internal combustion engine connected through a transmission to drive wheels of the vehicle, the transmission having a power take off (PTO) and PTO output gear;
- a drive system connected to said PTO comprising an electric motor, an energy storage system and a control system, the electric motor being coupled to the PTO;
- and
- wherein the energy storage system is coupled to the electric motor, wherein the electric motor provides power to the energy storage system and the control system monitors for an antilock brake condition and adjusts power received by the electric motor in response to anti-lock or traction control events.
A method of retrofitting a vehicle power drive system, the vehicle power drive system comprising an internal combustion engine connected through a transmission to drive wheels of said vehicle, said transmission having a power take off (PTO), the method comprising:
- connecting to said PTO a shaft of an electric motor, the electric motor being coupled to an energy storage system, and a vehicle monitoring and control system (VMCS);
- charging the energy storage system using the electric motor driven by the PTO;
- and
- providing power to an accessory by rotating the electric motor using power stored in the energy storage system, wherein the VMCS controls the electric motor during charging, wherein the VMCS interfaces with an original equipment manufacturers (OEM) vehicle data system to monitor for an anti-lock brake or traction control event and controls the electric motor in response to the anti-lock or traction control event.
