A method of communicating in an analyte monitoring system, comprising:
- activating a sensor control device at an activation time with a dedicated-use reader device, wherein a second reader device is not permitted to join communication with the sensor control device after a predetermined time period after the activation time, the predetermined time period being less than an operating life of the sensor control device;
- and
- joining, by the second reader device, communication with the sensor control device during the predetermined time period, wherein the second reader device is a smart phone.
A method of communicating in an analyte monitoring system, comprising:
- activating a sensor control device at an activation time, wherein the sensor control device is permitted to communicate with a first reader device and wherein a second reader device is not permitted to join communication with the sensor control device after a predetermined time period after the activation time, the predetermined time period being less than an operating life of the sensor control device;
- and
- joining, by the second reader device, communication with the sensor control device during the predetermined time period, wherein the second reader device is a smart phone.
