Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer

An ion injector for directionally-extended ion injection into an analyzer comprising:

• an ion source;
• an ion guide arranged to receive ions from said ion source;
• and
• a converter receiving radiofrequency pulses, said converter extended in a direction that is locally orthogonal to an initial path of ions ejected from said converter,
• wherein said converter accepts ions from said ion guide with the accepted ions spatially spreading within said converter prior to ejection from said converter, and wherein the initial path of ejected ions directs ions into the analyzer.

A mass spectrometer comprising:

• an equalizing electrostatic trap extended in a Z-direction from a first edge to a second edge, said first edge comprising an edge electrode with an aperture through which ions enter into said equalizing electrostatic trap;
• an analyzer into which ions are passed from said equalizing electrostatic trap;
• and
• a joint mirror electrode having a potential that is lowered to pass ions from said equalizing electrostatic trap to said analyzer,
• wherein said analyzer has an X-directional length at least twice as long as an X-directional length of said equalizing electrostatic trap.
