A light-driven cation pump, wherein the light-driven cation pump comprises an amino acid sequence which has at least 70% sequence identity to the full length amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO:
- 1 (Krokinobacter eikastus rhodopsin 2;
- KR2), and which comprises a substitution at a position corresponding to G263 in SEQ ID NO:
- 1, which substitution confers a potassium ion pumping ability.
