Abstract
The present invention includes a retractable stringed musical instrument; specifically a stringed musical instrument having a tailpiece, a body coupled to the tailpiece, a neck coupled to the body and a fingerboard coupled to the neck. The fingerboard and the neck extends and retracts relative to the body. The retractable stringed instrument further comprises a mechanism to maintain tension on the strings of the instrument regardless if the neck is in the extended or retracted position.
Claims6
A musical instrument comprising:
- (a) a body having a leading end and a trailing end;
- (b) a neck, having a distal end and a proximal end, attached to the leading of the body;
- (c) a head portion disposed on the distal end of the neck;
- (d) a tailpiece affixed to the trailing end of the body, wherein the tailpiece compromises:
- (i) a distal end:
- a (ii) proximal end having a plurality of slots to accommodate a plurality of strings, wherein the slots are raised a height from the trailing end;
- (iii) a first sidewall and a second sidewall each extending between the distal end and proximate end and each sidewall having one or more steps;
- and (v);
- at least one tuning machine affixed to a position on the first sidewall and at least one tuning machine affixed to a position on the second sidewall;
- and wherein
- (e) the plurality of strings each have a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of each of the plurality of strings is attached to the head portion and the second end of each of the plurality of strings is attached to one of the at least one tuning machines on the tailpiece, and wherein each of the plurality of strings extends through one of the plurality of slots where the heights of the plurality of slots are configured to maintain a distance between the bottom of the string and the neck along the entire length of the string.

A musical instrument comprising:
- (a) a body having a leading end and a trailing end;
- (b) a neck, having a distal end and a proximal end, slidably mounted for movement longitudinally of said body between a first position and a second position;
- (c) a head portion disposed on the distal end of the neck;
- (d) a depression, having a distal end, a proximal end and two substantially parallel side walls, in the neck extending at least a portion of the length thereof;
- (e) a trolley mounted within the depression for movement longitudinally of said neck between a first position and a second position;
- (f) a tailpiece having a plurality of tuning machines affixed to the trailing end of the body;
- and.
- (g) a plurality of strings having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of each of the plurality of strings is attached to the trolley and the second end of each of the plurality of strings is attached to one of the plurality of tuning machines on the tailpiece.

A musical apparatus comprising:
- (a) a hollow portion;
- (b) a distal end;
- (c) a proximal end having a height and a plurality of slots extending partially along the height and configured to accommodate a plurality of strings;
- (d) a first sidewall and a second sidewall each extending between the distal end and the proximate end and each sidewall having one or more steps;
- (e) at least one tuning machine affixed to a position on the first sidewall and at least one tuning machine affixed to a position on the second sidewall.
