Abstract
Systems and methods for locating, organizing, and monitoring sensor nodes in a sensor node network. A sensor node network manager receives a first environmental measurement from a first sensor node and a second environmental measurement from a second sensor node. The first and second environmental measurements are compared to determine if the first and second sensor nodes detected a common event. If a common event was detected by both sensor nodes, the first and second sensor nodes are contextually related and co-located.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- receiving a first environmental measurement in a sparse representation from a first sensor node;
- receiving a second environmental measurement in a sparse representation from a second sensor node;
- comparing the first environmental measurement with the second environmental measurement to determine whether the first and second environmental measurements signal detection of a common event, wherein comparing the first environmental measurement to the second environmental measurement includes determining a cross-correlation between the first environmental measurement and the second environmental measurement;
- identifying a location of the first sensor node relative to the second sensor node based on a determination from the comparison that the first and second environment measurements detected the common event.

A method comprising:
- receiving a plurality of environmental measurements generated by a respective plurality of sensor nodes each comprising at least a first sensor using a first sensing modality and a second sensor using a second sensing modality;
- comparing the plurality of environmental measurements to identify environmental measurements that include detection of a common event;
- assigning the sensor nodes that generated environmental measurements that include detection of the common event to a contextually related group;
- and
- assigning a sensing task based on a selected sensing modality to a selected plurality of the sensor nodes in the contextually related group.
A sensor node network management system comprising:
- a communication interface for communicating with a plurality of sensor nodes;
- and
- a processor and non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed on the processor, are operative to perform functions including:
- receiving a first environmental measurement in a sparse representation from a first sensor node;
- receiving a second environmental measurement in a sparse representation from a second sensor node;
- comparing the first environmental measurement with the second environmental measurement to determine whether the first and second environmental measurements signal detection of a common event;
- and
- identifying a location of the first sensor node relative to the second sensor node based on a determination from the comparison that the first and second environment measurements detected the common event;
- receiving a plurality of environmental measurements in addition to the first and second environmental measurements generated by a respective plurality of sensor nodes including the first and second sensor nodes, each comprising at least a first sensor using a first sensing modality and a second sensor using a second sensing modality;
- comparing the plurality of environmental measurements to identify environmental measurements that include detection of a common event;
- assigning the sensor nodes that generated environmental measurements that include detection of the common event to a contextually related group;
- and
- assigning a sensing task based on a first sensing modality to a first plurality of the sensor nodes in the contextually related group and a sensing task based on a second sensing modality to a second plurality of sensor nodes in the contextually related group such that each of the sensor nodes is assigned to perform no more than one sensing modality.
