Abstract
The present invention relates to a ceramic or metallic component including a first region having a first porosity ranging between 1 and 30%. The component includes a second region having a second porosity that is less than the first porosity. The component includes at least one graded transition between the first and second regions.
Claims20
A ceramic or metallic component comprising:
- first region having a first porosity ranging between 1 and 30%;
- and
- a second region having a second porosity that is less than the first porosity, wherein the component comprises at least one graded transition between the first and second regions.
A turbine blade comprising:
- a first region having a hollow center and a porosity ranging between 1 and 30%;
- and
- a second region comprising no porosity or a porosity less than the first region.
A method of making a porous component comprising:
- building the component on a layer-by-layer basis, comprising the steps of:
- (a) irradiating a layer of powder in a powder bed to form an at least partially fused region;
- (b) providing a subsequent layer of powder over the powder bed;
- and
- (c) repeating steps (a) and (b) until the component is completed, wherein the component comprises a first metallic region, the first metallic region having a porosity ranging between 1 and 30%, and second metallic region having either no porosity or a porosity less than that of the first metallic region.
2 more elements
A turbine blade comprising:
- a hollow center;
- a first region having an outer surface and an internal surface exposed to the hollow center, the first region further having a first porosity;
- and
- a second region having a second porosity that is less than the first porosity, wherein air flows from inside the hollow center through the first porous region to cool the outer surface.
