Language learning systems and methods

A language learning system comprising:

• a keyword store;
• a distractor store configured to store a plurality of distractors;
• and
• a first computer comprising a processor and a non-transitory machine-readable storage having instructions executed by the processor, the first computer is configured to:
• identify one or more keywords from text of a resource received from a second computer over one or more networks;
• for each respective keyword parsed from the text, determine a word difficulty score associated with the respective keyword;
• store into the keyword store the one or more keywords parsed from the text and each respective word difficulty score;
• identify in a set of one or more language skills a particular language skill to exercise based on an ability score in a record of a learner assigned to the particular language skill to exercise;
• select a learning activity of a type of learning activity that exercises the identified language skill in response to identifying the language skill to exercise;
• generate one or more distractors of one or more types of distractors using the one or more keywords stored in the keyword store, wherein the first computer stores into the distractor store at least one distractor of a type of distractor corresponding to the type of learning activity selected to exercise the language skill;
• select from the distractor store a set of one or more distractors, each distractor of the set of the type of distractor corresponding to the type of the learning activity;
• and
• generate one or more graphical user interfaces configured to display the selected learning activity at the second computer, wherein the selected learning activity comprises at least one distractor from the selected set of one or more distractors.

A language learning system comprising:

• a user data store storing a record of a learner;
• a resource storing one or more resources;
• and
• a computer comprising a processor and a non-transitory machine-readable storage having instructions executed by the processor, wherein the computer is configured to:
• identify in the record of the learner stored in the user data store a set of one or more ability scores of the learner, wherein the record of the learner contains a language proficiency level associated with the learner, and wherein the language proficiency level of the learner comprises one or more ability scores for one or more language skills;
• parse one or more keywords from text of the one or more resources stored in the resource store;
• determine for each respective keyword, a word difficulty score associated with the respective keyword;
• generate a plurality of distractors of one or more types of distractors using the one or more keywords parsed from the text of the one or more resources, each respective distractor having a distractor difficulty score based upon the word difficulty score of the respective keyword used to generate the respective distractor;
• identify in the record of the learner a set of one or more learner preferences comprising one or more content interests of the learner;
• determine a type of learning activity for exercising a language skill based on an ability score of the learner at the language skill;
• select from the plurality of distractors a set of one or more distractors generated using the one or more keywords parsed from the text of a resource associated with a type of content corresponding to a content interest of the learner indicated by the record of the learner;
• generate one or more graphical user interfaces configured to display the learning activity of the activity type at a second computer associated with the learner, wherein the learning activity comprises the set of distractors;
• and
• generate a lesson comprising a set of one or more learning activities according to a learner goal in the learner preferences.
