Abstract
Methods and systems for encouraging on-line gaming. An on-line competition is conducted amongst a first plurality of contestants using a device operatively coupled to a computer system via an internet connection. No cash prizes are awarded in relation to the conducting of the on-line competition. A subset of the first plurality of contestants is selected to form a second plurality of contestants that qualify for entry to a live competition held at a physical location. Cash prizes are awarded as part of the live competition.

- eliciting and receiving a first plurality of contestants to a website controlled by a computer system for participation in an on-line competition;
- conducting, using the computer system, the on-line competition, wherein each one of the first plurality of contestants play in the on-line competition using a device operatively coupled to the computer system via an internet connection, and wherein no cash prizes are awarded in relation to the conducting of the on-line competition;
- forming a second plurality of contestants as a subset of the first plurality of contestants based at least in part on success of the first plurality of contestants in the on-line competition;
- conducting a live competition at a physical location as a competition between contestants of the second plurality of contestants physically present in the physical location at a start of the live competition;
- and
- awarding cash prizes to a subset of the second plurality of contestants based at least in part on performance of the second plurality of contestants in the live competition.
A system for encouraging on-line gaming comprising:
- a host unit that includes a computer-readable storage medium operatively coupled to a processor, wherein the host unit further includes:
- an on-line competition selection module executed in the processor and configured to select a first plurality of contestants for participation in an on-line competition,
- a gaming unit executed in the processor and configured to conduct the on-line competition, wherein the first plurality of contestants play in the on-line competition via an internet connection to the host unit, and wherein no cash prizes are awarded in relation to the on-line competition, and
- a live competition selection module executed in the processor and configured to select a subset of the first plurality of contestants to form a second plurality of contestants, wherein the second plurality of contestants qualifies for entry to a live competition to be held at a physical location amongst those contestants physically present in the physical location at the start of the live competition, wherein the selection of the subset of the first plurality of contestants is based at least in part on performance of the first plurality of contestants in the on-line competition;
- and
- wherein cash prizes are awarded to a subset of the second plurality of contestants in the live competition based at least in part on performance of the second plurality of contestants in the live competition.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon for causing a suitably programmed computer to execute a method, the method comprising:
- eliciting and receiving a first plurality of contestants to a website controlled by a computer system for participation in an on-line competition;
- conducting, using the computer, the on-line competition, wherein each one of the first plurality of contestants play in the on-line competition using a device operatively coupled to the computer via an internet connection, and wherein no cash prizes are awarded in relation to the conducting of the on-line competition;
- and
- selecting, using the computer, a subset of the first plurality of contestants to form a second plurality of contestants, wherein the second plurality of contestants qualifies for entry to a live competition to be held at a physical location amongst those contestants physically present in the physical location at a start of the live competition, and wherein the selecting of the subset of the first plurality of contestants is based at least in part on performance of the first plurality of contestants in the on-line competition,
- wherein cash prizes are awarded to a subset of the second plurality of contestants in the live competition based at least in part on performance of the second plurality of contestants in the live competition.
