Congestion based roaming in a wireless local area network

A communication device, comprising:

• a channel scanner to perform a roaming scan to identify a candidate channel;
• a congestion level identifier to calculate a congestion metric associated with traffic over the candidate channel corresponding to a plurality of wireless stations in a basic service set (BSS), wherein the congestion metric is based at least in part on an amount of energy measured over the candidate channel;
• and
• a roaming manager to roam to an access point (AP) associated with the candidate channel based at least in part on the calculated congestion metric.

A communication device, comprising:

• means for performing a roaming scan to identify a candidate channel;
• means for calculating a congestion metric associated with traffic over the candidate channel corresponding to a plurality of wireless stations in a basic service set (BSS), wherein the congestion metric is based at least in part on an amount of energy measured over the candidate channel;
• and
• means for roaming to an access point (AP) associated with the candidate channel based at least in part on the calculated congestion metric.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing code for wireless communication at a wireless station, the code comprising instructions executable to cause a communication device to:

• perform a roaming scan to identify a candidate channel;
• calculate a congestion metric associated with traffic over the candidate channel corresponding to a plurality of wireless stations in a basic service set (BSS), wherein the congestion metric is based at least in part on an amount of energy measured over the candidate channel;
• and
• roam to an access point (AP) associated with the candidate channel based at least in part on the calculated congestion metric.
