System and method for mobile data expansion

A method comprising

• establishing, by a road marker, a first wireless link to an access point of internet network;
• forming, by the road marker, a short-range wireless communications network;
• coupling to one or more mobile terminals via the short-range wireless communications network;
• and
• communicating data or media between the one or more mobile terminals and the internet network.

A system comprising:

• an access point coupled to backhaul network, the backhaul network comprising an internet network;
• a data expansion road marker (DERM) configured to form a WIFI area hotspot or WIFI local area network, the DERM comprising:
• a communications interface configured to couple to an access point of a backhaul network via a first wireless communication link;
• a wireless transceiver configured to transmit and receive data to a mobile device via a second wireless communications link;
• processing circuitry configured to communicate the data between the mobile terminal and the access point;
• a power source configured to provide electrical energy to at least one of the processing circuitry and the wireless transceiver;
• and
• a housing configured to be mounted on a vertical structure and configured to contain the processing circuitry and the wireless transceiver.
