A non-naturally occurring eukaryotic organism, comprising one or more gene disruptions, said one or more gene disruptions occurring in genes that encode enzymes selected from the group consisting of a cytosolic pyruvate decarboxylase, a mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase, a cytosolic ethanol-specific alcohol dehydrogenase and a mitochondrial ethanol-specific alcohol dehydrogenase, wherein said one or more gene disruptions confers production of long chain alcohols in the cytosol of said organism.
