A method for calibration of a gas sensor, comprising the steps of:

• providing a gas detector cell for optical detection of a predetermined gas having a chamber formed within the cell forming a volume, the chamber having a membrane allowing passage of gas into and out of the formed volume, at least one catalyst for converting the predetermined gas diffusing through the catalyst into a sample gas proximate to the flow of predetermined gas entering the formed volume, and an optical means for investigating the gas sample and determining the presence of the predetermined gas within the formed volume, wherein the formed volume is less than 4 cm3;
• and
• creating a pulsed source through the optical means to detect the sample gas, the pulsed source having a given frequency, and a signal processing unit to estimate a gas level one of at and above a predetermined alarm limit.

A method for calibration of a gas sensor, comprising the steps of:

• providing a gas detector cell for optical detection of a predetermined gas having a chamber formed within the cell forming a volume, the chamber having a membrane allowing passage of gas into and out of the formed volume, at least one catalyst for converting the predetermined gas diffusing through the catalyst into a sample gas proximate to the flow of predetermined gas entering the formed volume, and an optical means for investigating the gas sample and determining the presence of the predetermined gas within the formed volume, the formed volume is less than 4 cm3;
• and
• further comprising a heating element in combination with the catalyst forming a heated catalyzer, the temperature of the heated catalyzer being variable for a period of time to cool down the catalyst to a temperature to eliminate the presence of the sample gas within the chamber, and providing a second heated catalyzer to remove or adsorb the predetermined gas in the formed volume, the second heated catalyzer being activated for a limited time sufficient to provide an offset calibration during the activation time of the catalyst in the second heated catalyzer.
