A semiconductor device comprising:

• a pixel portion configured to display image information in a first mode and a second mode;
• a light supply portion configured to emit light to the pixel portion with first luminance in the first mode and with second luminance in the second mode;
• and
• an arithmetic device configured to supply a control signal to the light supply portion and an image signal for displaying the image information in the pixel portion,
• wherein the first mode is selected depending on the control signal when an area of a dark portion in the image information is larger than a predetermined value and the second mode is selected depending on the control signal when the area of the dark portion in the image information is smaller than the predetermined value, and
• wherein the first luminance is lower than the second luminance.

A semiconductor device comprising:

• a pixel portion configured to display image information in a first mode and a second mode;
• a light supply portion configured to emit light to the pixel portion with first luminance in the first mode and with second luminance in the second mode;
• and
• an arithmetic device configured to supply a control signal to the light supply portion and an image signal for displaying the image information in the pixel portion,
• wherein the first mode is selected depending on the control signal when a contrast of the image information exceeds a predetermined value and the second mode is selected depending on the control signal when the contrast of the image information does not exceed the predetermined value, and
• wherein the first luminance is lower than the second luminance.
