Abstract
A method of diagnosing a subset of Epstein Barr Virus, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) patients through a multi-prong clinical/serological analysis is provided wherein Epstein Barr Virus Abortive Lytic Replication (EBV) is determined by detecting the presence of BMRF1 in serum antibody assays. A method of treating patients diagnosed with Epstein Barr Virus Abortive Lytic Replication (EBV), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) with specific antiviral nucleosides is also provided, to alleviate the condition.
Claims20
A method of detecting Abortive lytic replication-based Epstein-Barr Virus in a biological sample of a patient, comprising:
- detecting the presence of IgG serum antibodies to the EBV Early encoded protein deoxyribonucleotide polymerase accessory processivity factor, BMRF1;
- and
- determining EBV-based SEID in a patient with the presence of antibody titers over 10.0.
A method of treating Epstein-Barr Virus abortive lytic replication in a patient, comprising the steps of;
- identifying that the patient falls within Group A EBV patients;
- obtaining a biological sample from the patient and confirming the presence of BMRF1 titers;
- and
- treating the patient with an effective amount of at least one antiviral agent if the presence of BMRF1 titers above 10.0 are confirmed in the patient's biological sample.
A kit for detecting abortive lytic replication-based EBV in a biological sample of an SEID patient which comprises an antibody that binds specifically to the BMRF1 protein, wherein said binding characteristics comprise streptavidin-phycoerythin binding to an IgG antibody that is bound to the BMRF1 protein together with reagents for the detection of binding of said antibody to the BMRF1 protein.
