Abstract
Provided is a die trim section with a recess adapted to retain slugs in a stamping process. The recess may be added to existing die inserts via wire EDM, conventional surface grinding or other suitable methods. The recess extends a distance greater than the die trim punch stroke and the cross-sectional area of the recess decreases along the height of the recess.
Claims23
A trim punch and die trim section assembly for a stamping operation wherein the trim punch and die trim section assembly retains a stamping slug generated by a stamping operation, the trim punch and die trim section assembly comprising:
- a trim punch and a die trim section;
- the die trim section comprising a body with a top surface and a die trim profile opening extending into the body from the top surface, the die trim profile opening comprising interior trim profile walls and extending along a longitudinal central axis;
- the trim punch being receivable into the die trim profile opening a maximum depth along the longitudinal axis from the top surface of the body;
- at least one recess along an edge of said die trim profile opening, each at least one recess extending parallel with the longitudinal axis from the top surface of the body along the die trim interior walls and having a height along said interior trim profile walls from a top end of the recess at the top surface of the body to a bottom end of the recess;
- the height of each at least one recess exceeding the maximum depth that the trim punch is receivable into the die trim profile opening;
- and
- each at least one recess having a respective cross-sectional area in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis along the height of the recess, the cross-sectional area of the recess at the top end of the recess being greater than the cross-sectional area of the recess at the bottom end of the recess.
A method for cutting a slug from a sheet of material, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) placing a sheet of material between a trim punch and a corresponding die, the trim punch having a face configured to cut a perimeter of the slug, the face having a perimeter, the die including a die trim section having a die trim profile opening for receiving the punch, the die trim profile opening generally conforming to the perimeter of the trim punch, the die trim profile opening being defined by interior trim profile walls;
- (b) pressing the trim punch face through the sheet of material and into the die trim profile opening along a downward axial direction of movement to cut the slug from the sheet of material and simultaneously creating a tab on the slug as the slug enters the trim profile opening, the tab being formed in a recess disposed on the interior trim profile walls, the recess extending a depth into the interior trim profile walls perpendicular to the downward axial direction of movement of the trim punch face and extending a height along the interior trim profile walls parallel with the axial direction of movement of the trim punch from a top end of the die trim profile opening;
- (c) moving the tab and the slug axially with downward movement of the trim punch face into the die trim profile opening without relative rotation of the slug with respect to the trim punch face as the trim punch face moves to a maximum insertion depth into the die trim profile opening, the tab remaining in the recess and moving along the height of the recess while the trim punch face moves to the maximum insertion depth;
- (d) continuously and increasingly compressing the tab as the tab moves along the height of the recess;
- and
- (e) retracting the trim punch face from the die trim profile opening and using the tab in the recess to assist in resisting retraction of the slug with retraction of the trim punch face.
