Abstract
Proppants are used in oil and gas extraction, particularly in fracking operations. The invention relates to resin coated proppants. The coatings on proppants have antimicrobial materials incorporated within these coatings. The antimicrobially active agents are incorporated in a concentration less than 20% by weight of the coatings or the active agent from these coatings can be released from these coatings in the environment of the proppants.
Claims21
A proppant comprising frac sand or an aluminum oxide-containing particulate which is coated with a polymeric coating containing an antimicrobial material wherein the weight percent of the antimicrobial material is about 20% or less as compared to the weight of the said coating.
A coated proppant comprising frac sand particulate material or an aluminum oxide-containing particulate material, wherein at least a portion of the particulate material has a coating comprising a durable polymeric matrix that includes at least one antimicrobial metal compound, wherein the said coated proppant provides antimicrobial activity by release of metal ions from the said compound into the environment of the proppant.
A proppant comprising particles with a polymeric coating that (i) provides the particles with any or all of the following properties:
- (a) improvement in the effective crush strength of the particles,
- (b) the capability to retain pieces of broken proppant, and
- (c) the capability to bond particles together to decrease proppant flowback;
- and (ii) contains an antimicrobial material that provides antimicrobial activity by release of an active agent into the environment of the proppant.
A coated proppant comprising frac sand particulate material or an aluminum oxide-containing particulate material, wherein at least a portion of the particulate material comprises at least two coating layers, in which at least one coating layer is durable and at least one coating layer contains at least one antimicrobial agent, wherein the said coated proppant provides antimicrobial activity by release of an active agent into the environment of the said proppant.
