1-15. (canceled)
A method of treating a patient having a spinal pathology within a functional spinal unit (FSU) having an upper vertebra, a lower vertebra, and an intervertebral disc therebetween, the method comprising:
- damaging an anterior longitudinal ligament (ALL) of the patient, thereby increasing the range of motion of the FSU in extension,
- inserting an interbody device into a void between the upper and lower vertebrae, the interbody device comprising:
- a) an upper portion having an upper surface adapted for bearing against the upper vertebra and having teeth extending therefrom for gripping the upper vertebra,
- b) a lower portion having a lower surface adapted for bearing against the lower vertebra and having teeth extending therefrom for gripping the lower vertebra, and
- c) a wall connecting the upper and lower portions,
- wherein the upper and lower portions of the device are non-parallel.

- d) an upper extension extending above the upper surface and having at least one transverse hole having an upper bone fastener received therein, wherein the upper bone fastener has a longitudinal axis extending substantially in a coronal plane of the patient, and
- e) a lower extension extending beneath the lower surface and having at least one transverse hole having a lower bone fastener received therein, wherein the lower bone fastener has a longitudinal axis extending substantially in the coronal plane of the patient,
- wherein the upper and lower portions of the device are non-parallel,
- wherein a first dimension of the device selected from length and width in a transverse plane of the patient is at least twice as great as a second dimension of the device selected from length and width in the transverse plane of the patient.

An intervertebral device, comprising:
- a) an upper portion having an upper surface adapted for bearing against an upper vertebra and having teeth extending therefrom for gripping the upper vertebra,
- b) a lower portion having a lower surface adapted for bearing against a lower vertebra and having teeth extending therefrom for gripping the lower vertebra, wherein the upper and lower portions of the device extend in a non-parallel manner in a first direction,
- c) a wall connecting the upper and lower portions,
- d) an upper extension extending above the upper surface and having at least one transverse hole having an upper bone fastener received therein, wherein the upper bone fastener has a longitudinal axis extending substantially transversely from the first direction, and
- e) a lower extension extending beneath the lower surface and having at least one transverse hole having a lower bone fastener received therein, wherein the lower bone fastener has a longitudinal axis extending substantially transversely from the first direction.

An intervertebral device, comprising:
- a) an upper portion having an upper surface adapted for bearing against an upper vertebra and having teeth extending therefrom for gripping the upper vertebra,
- b) a lower portion having a lower surface adapted for bearing against a lower vertebra and having teeth extending therefrom for gripping the lower vertebra,
- c) a wall connecting the upper and lower portions,
- d) an upper extension extending above the upper surface and having at least one transverse hole having an upper bone fastener received therein, and
- e) a lower extension extending beneath the lower surface and having at least one transverse hole having a lower bone fastener received therein,
- the device defining a height between a posterior end of the upper surface of the upper portion and a posterior end of the lower surface of the lower portion, wherein the height is adjustable under an axial load.
