Abstract
A blood storage system comprising: a collection vessel for red blood cells; an oxygen or oxygen and carbon dioxide depletion device; a storage vessel for red blood cells; tubing connecting the collection vessel to the oxygen or oxygen and carbon dioxide depletion device and the oxygen or oxygen and carbon dioxide depletion device to the storage vessel; and a gamma or X-ray irradiating device is used to irradiate red blood cells stored in the vessel, storing red blood cells under anaerobic conditions.
Claims22
A blood storage system comprising:
- a collection vessel for red blood cells;
- an oxygen or oxygen and carbon dioxide depletion device;
- a storage vessel for storing red blood cells under anaerobic conditions;
- tubing connecting the collection vessel to the oxygen or oxygen and carbon dioxide depletion device and the oxygen or oxygen and carbon dioxide depletion device to the storage vessel;
- and
- irradiating said red blood cells stored with a gamma or X-ray irradiating device, then storing said red blood cells in said storage vessel.
A method for storing red blood cells, said method comprising:
- removing oxygen or oxygen and carbon dioxide from red blood cells, thereby producing anaerobic red blood cells;
- irradiating said anaerobic red blood cells via either gamma or X-ray irradiation, thereby producing irradiated anaerobic red blood cells;
- and
- storing said irradiated anaerobic red blood cells.
A method for storing red blood cells, said method comprising:
- irradiating red blood cells via either gamma or X-ray irradiation, thereby producing irradiated red blood cells;
- removing oxygen or oxygen and carbon dioxide from said irradiated red blood cells, thereby producing irradiated anaerobic red blood cells;
- and
- storing said irradiated anaerobic red blood cells under anaerobic conditions.
