Adaptive overvoltage protection for adaptive power adapters

A controller integrated circuit (IC) comprising:

• a switch controller that is configured to control switching operation of a switch on a primary side of a transformer, wherein the switching operation of the switch induces an output voltage on a secondary side of the transformer;
• a feedback circuit that is configured to receive a feedback signal from a protocol IC that is configured to charge an electronic device with the output voltage in accordance with a charging protocol;
• and
• a comparator circuit that is configured to compare a sensed output voltage to an overvoltage protection threshold to detect an overvoltage condition of the output voltage,
• wherein the controller IC sets the overvoltage protection threshold to a first level that is smaller than a second level during a startup of the controller IC and, after detecting proper operation of the protocol IC on the secondary side of the transformer, sets the overvoltage protection threshold to the second level.
