System and method for smoke detection during anatomical surgery

A method for smoke detection during an anatomical surgery, said method comprising:

• in an image processing engine communicatively coupled to an image-capturing device:
• estimating a partially visible region in a current video frame based on a temporal difference between said current video frame and a previous video frame received from said image-capturing device, wherein said image-capturing device is configured to capture one or more video frames;
• detecting one or more candidate pixels in said estimated partially visible region in said current video frame;
• and
• determining a smoke region in said partially visible region based on pruning of said detected one or more candidate pixels.

A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored thereon, a set of computer executable instructions for causing a computer to perform steps comprising:

• estimating a partially visible region in a current video frame based on a temporal difference between said current video frame and a previous video frame received from an image-capturing device, wherein said image-capturing device is communicatively coupled to said computer, wherein said image-capturing device is configured to capture one or more video frames;
• detecting one or more candidate pixels in said estimated partially visible region in said current video frame;
• and
• determining a smoke region in said partially visible region based on pruning of said detected one or more candidate pixels.
