Abstract
Biomass feedstocks (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, and municipal waste biomass) are processed to produce useful products, such as fuels. For example, systems are described that can use feedstock materials, such as cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic materials and/or starchy materials, to produce a product or intermediate, e.g., energy, a food, a fuel, or a material.
Claims26
A processing facility configured to process lignocellulosic materials, the processing facility comprising:
- one or more physical treatment systems configured for reducing recalcitrance of lignocellulosic material, including at least an ionizing radiation system, the ionizing radiation system having a process parameter comprising a residence time and/or an energy level, and being further configured for adjusting the process parameter based on an input selected to provide an ionizing radiation treatment based at least in part on the lignin content the lignocellulosic material;
- and
- a lignin content measurement system, the lignin content measurement system configured to ascertain a lignin content measurement and to provide an input for at least one of the one or more physical treatment systems, the input corresponding to a setting selected for a process parameter corresponding to the respective physical treatment system to impart a recalcitrance-reducing treatment based at least in part on a relationship between lignin content and recalcitrance.
