Abstract
A fastener assembly attaches items to fabrics and textiles. The fastener has particular application for easily attaching racing bibs (i.e., athlete numbers) to athletic garments, and obviating the need for safety pins. In one embodiment, a female portion that passes through the fabric or textile releasably connects with the male portion that fastens the item to the fabric or textile. In another embodiment, the female portion has a cover to facilitate passage through the fabric or textile. In a third embodiment, the male portion passes through the fabric or textile, and includes a barb or a hook to do so.

A fastener kit for fastening an identifying bib in the form of a sheet with at least one aperture therethrough to a fabric athletic garment, the kit comprising:
- a female member in the form of a first plane having an opening, a substantially flat inner face, and an outer face on a side of the plane opposite the inner face, wherein the outer face has a surface forming a wide arc dome for minimizing chafing of the skin of a wearer of the garment;
- and
- a male member in the form of a second plane having a substantially flat inner face and a projecting member extending from the inner face of the second plane to a distal end terminating in a knob smaller than the aperture identifying bib, wherein (i) the opening in the first plane is smaller than the knob for releasably capturing the knob to hold the identifying bib against an outer surface of the garment, and (ii) the inner faces of the first and second planes are spaced from each other a distance greater than the combined thickness of the identifying bib and the garment when the knob is captured within the opening in the first plane.
A fabric athletic garment and a racing bib in the form of a sheet that are fastened together by at least one fastener assembly with the garment and the racing bib disposed between female and male members of the fastener assembly, wherein:
- the female member is in the form of a first plane having an opening, a substantially flat inner face, and an outer face on a side of the plane opposite the inner face, wherein the female member is disposed within the garment and has an outer face with a surface forming a wide arc dome for minimizing chafing of the skin of a wearer of the garment;
- and
- the male member is in the form of a second plane having a substantially flat inner face and a projecting member extending from the inner face of the second plane to a distal end terminating in a knob smaller than the aperture in the racing bib, wherein (i) the opening in the first plane is smaller than the knob to releasably capture the knob and hold the racing bib against an outer surface of the garment, and (ii) the inner faces of the first and second planes are spaced from each other a distance greater than the combined thickness of the racing bib and the garment.
