Method and system to curate media collections

A method of curating collections of digital photographs in a first computer comprising a memory, the method comprising:

• receiving photographs associated with a user;
• storing the photographs in a database in association with the user;
• associating the media in the database with information identifying at least one of a date when the photograph was taken, a location where the photograph was taken, and an event associated with the photograph;
• transmitting the photographs and associated information to a second computer;
• determining that the second computer has not curated a type of photograph collection;
• curating the type of photograph collection by:
• querying the database with a query associated with the type of photograph collection, and
• storing the result of the query in the database;
• outputting the type of photograph collection in a user interface in the first computer.

A method of combining at least two groups of photos in a computer comprising a memory, the method comprising:

• receiving an instruction from a client routine associated with a user to combine at least a first and a second group of photos into a third group;
• obtaining a first set of hierarchically structured location information associated with the first group of photos;
• obtaining a second set of hierarchically structured location information associated with the second group of photos;
• determining the lowest hierarchical location element common to each of the hierarchically structured location information sets;
• determining a name for the third group comprising the lowest hierarchical location element in common to each of the hierarchically structured location information sets;
• and
• sending the determined name to a client computing device associated with the user.
