Abstract

This invention presents Ecosystems addressing limited capabilities for interactive team design, amidst thrust for improved productivity, enhanced creativity and higher quality. The Ecosystem for Team Design and Collaboration presents apparatus for taking snapshots of whiteboards with sketches from planning, design or brainstorming meetings, using image sensor embedded in a mobile client, for offering a vector representation of the content and hence expediting the preparation of ‘presentable entities’ (eliminating the need to redraw). The Ecosystem for Learning and Team Design outlines a flexible design methodology for automatically assessing the quality of design activities relative to a given design process. It is the only learning tool for computer aided design (CAD) capable of assessing all the five design stages. Its assessment engine, the e-design process, is modular and can be integrated into electronic lab notebooks. Its input, the standardized e-design notebooks, are also quite versatile and can accommodate complex 3D CAD files.

Dependent claims

An apparatus, for facilitating team design, planning, learning or collaboration, an apparatus

comprising of mobile clients capable of accepting input from the user (e.g., graphical, textual or imagery information), carrying out interpretation and/or analysis of the information and communicating,
comprising of a web server speaking the language of HTTP and capable of supporting communications through PHP or IIS interfaces,
comprising of a centralized server (a cloud server, virtual private servers, virtual machines or a data center) responsible for carrying out selected interpretation or analysis assignments not handled by the mobile clients, for archiving the results of the interpretation and/or analysis (presumably vector and/or meta data), for archiving other files related to the collaboration or team design, and for supporting data retrieval per incoming requests,
supporting delegation of assignments between the mobile clients and the centralized server through dynamic load balancing, but in such a way that
local interpretation and analysis on the mobile clients is encouraged (as long as resources permit),
processing latency is minimized and/or masked to offer real-time experience to the user,
the interpretation and analysis takes place locally when communications with the centralized server is not available,
supporting of communications with remote team members (or stakeholders), as well as with external tools for computer aided design, design verification or validation, data management, life cycle management or collaboration, and
also capable of supporting peer-to-peer communications (i.e., without a centralized server).

A method. referred to as the e-design process, for automatically assessing the quality of design work relative to each stage in a given design process, for the purpose of efficient learning and productive team design, a continuous improvement method operating on pages from standardized e-design notebooks, a method further utilizing:

a recognition engine (part of data collection module) for carrying out incremental recognition of graphics, text or equation objects, and producing vector graphics,
an image logic module (also part of the data collection) responsible for producing an intermediate output containing the vector graphics,
a mining module for extracting information relevant to the design process from the vector objects recognized,
an assessment module for assessing the information extracted and producing itemized grades with confidence,
an evaluation module for interpreting the itemized grades using a rubric,
a decision module for producing itemized decisions based on the items achieved,
a configurable supervisory layer for allowing supervisors to track design progress (by reviewing logs of status or design alerts), derive budget or cost estimates, or project a completion date,
a communication module for communicating information about necessary actions to mentee, mentor or supervisor, and
a database for storing the information related to the target outcomes, the rubric, minimum relevance thresholds as well as dictionaries storing the valid objects supported by the graphics, text or equation recognition.
