The present invention relates generally to a method of diagnosing, prognosing or monitoring the development or progress of metastatic cancer, more particularly bone metastatic cancer. The method of the present invention more particularly provides a method for detecting metastatic cancer, or a predisposition thereto, by screening for the differential expression of a panel of genes which comprise an IRF7 binding site. In a related aspect, the present invention provides a method of therapeutically or prophylactically treating metastatic cancer, in particular bone metastatic cancer. More particularly, the present invention provides a means of therapeutically or prophylactically treating metastatic cancer by upregulating type I IFN levels.

A method of treating metastatic cancer in an individual, the metastatic cancer being characterized by aberrant IRF7 functionality, the method comprising administering an effective amount of a composition, wherein the composition comprises an agent which upregulates the level of Type I IFN in the individual.
A method of assessing the metastatic status of a tumour from an individual, the method comprising detecting the expression of one or more genes by the tumour, wherein one or more genes comprise an IRF7 binding site in their promoter, wherein a decreased level of expression of the one or more genes relative to the level of expression of the one or more genes in a corresponding non-metastatic tumour is indicative of the metastatic phenotype of the tumour.
A method of assessing the metastatic status of a tumour from an individual, the method comprising detecting the functional level of IRF7, IRF9 or STAT1 in the tumour wherein a decrease in the functional level of the IRF7, IRF9 or STAT1 in a corresponding non-metastatic tumour is indicative of the metastatic phenotype of the tumour.
