An anode active material for a lithium secondary battery, the anode active material comprising:
- a metal silicide core;
- a silicon shell disposed on the core;
- and
- a metal nitride disposed on a surface of the silicon shell opposite the core.

- a porous metal silicide;
- a silicon phase comprising silicon and disposed on the porous metal silicide;

- a metal nitride dispersed on an interface between the metal silicide and the silicon phase.
