Protection of materials by sphingosine based compounds

A method for coating a hydroxyapatite surface, preferably for reducing or preventing acid erosion and/or the precipitation of salts, comprising contacting said surface with a sphingosine compound having formula I:

• wherein X is an alkyl or alkenyl having 8-24 carbons, preferably 10 to 20 carbons, more preferably a linear alkyl;
• R1 is selected from H and C(═O)C1-20, preferably R1 is H;
• R2 is selected from H and OH, preferably R2 is OH;
• and
• R3 is selected from phosphate, OH or F, preferably OH,
• or a conjugate of said compound.

An oral care composition comprising a sphingosine compound having formula I:

• wherein X is a alkyl or alkenyl having 8-24 carbons, preferably 10 to 20 carbons, more preferably a linear alkyl;
• R1 is selected from H and C(═O)C1-20, preferably R1 is H;
• R2 is selected from H and OH, preferably R2 is OH;
• and
• R3 is selected from phosphate, OH or F, preferably OH,
• or a conjugate of said compound.

A food composition comprising a sphingosine compound having formula I:

• wherein X is an alkyl or alkenyl having 8-24 carbons, preferably 10 to 20 carbons, more preferably a linear alkyl;
• R1 is selected from H and C(═O)C1-20, preferably R1 is H;
• R2 is selected from H and OH, preferably R2 is OH;
• and
• R3 is selected from phosphate, OH or F, preferably OH,
• or a conjugate of said compound.

Sphingosine compound having formula I:

• wherein X is an alkyl or alkenyl having 8-24 carbons, preferably 10 to 20 carbons, more preferably a linear alkyl;
• R1 is selected from H and C(═O)C1-20, preferably R1 is H;
• R2 is selected from H and OH, preferably R2 is OH;
• and
• R3 is selected from phosphate, OH or F, preferably OH,
• or a conjugate of said compound,
• for use as in preventing, reducing, or treating xerostomia or a symptom thereof.

A prosthetic tooth comprising hydroxyapatite, said tooth coated with a sphingosine compound having formula I:

• wherein X is an alkyl or alkenyl having 8-24 carbons, preferably 10 to 20 carbons, more preferably a linear alkyl;
• R1 is selected from H and C(═O)C1-20, preferably R1 is H;
• R2 is selected from H and OH, preferably R2 is OH;
• and
• R3 is selected from phosphate, OH or F, preferably OH,
• or a conjugate of said compound.

A cosmetic treatment for preventing the discoloration of a tooth comprising providing to said tooth a sphingosine compound having formula I:

• wherein X is a alkyl or alkenyl having 8-24 carbons, preferably 10 to 20 carbons, more preferably a linear alkyl;
• R1 is selected from H and C(═O)C1-20, preferably R1 is H;
• R2 is selected from H and OH, preferably R2 is OH;
• and
• R3 is selected from phosphate, OH or F, preferably OH,
• or a conjugate of said compound.

A sphingosine compound having formula I:

• wherein X is a alkyl or alkenyl having 8-24 carbons, preferably 10 to 20 carbons, more preferably a linear alkyl;
• R1 is selected from H and C(═O)C1-20, preferably R1 is H;
• R2 is selected from H and OH, preferably R2 is OH;
• and
• R3 is selected from phosphate, OH or F, preferably OH,
• or a conjugate of said compound, for use
• as an anti-tartar agent.

A sphingosine compound having formula I:

• wherein X is a alkyl or alkenyl having 8-24 carbons, preferably 10 to 20 carbons, more preferably a linear alkyl;
• R1 is selected from H and C(═O)C1-20, preferably R1 is H;
• R2 is selected from H and OH, preferably R2 is OH;
• and
• R3 is selected from phosphate, OH or F, preferably OH,
• or a conjugate of said compound,
• for use in reducing or preventing bacterial adhesion to a surface.

An article at least partially coated with a sphingosine compound having formula I:

• wherein X is a alkyl or alkenyl having 8-24 carbons, preferably 10 to 20 carbons, more preferably a linear alkyl;
• R1 is selected from H and C(═O)C1-20, preferably R1 is H;
• R2 is selected from H and OH, preferably R2 is OH;
• and
• R3 is selected from phosphate, OH or F, preferably OH,
• or a conjugate of said compound.
