Abstract
The disclosure relates to marker-less augmented reality methods which are operable in mobile applications and which involve an object-tracking method that uses projection and detection of a structured light pattern to track the location, orientation, and/or movement of an object in a scene.
Claims13
A method of tracking an object in a scene, the method comprising
- detecting at least three points of an object in a scene and
- using a projector to project structured light pattern on the scene, the structured light pattern including intersecting monochromatic lines, wherein at least six of the lines are different colors, and thereafter
- using an imaging device to capture an image of the scene including the object and the structured light pattern and
- calculating the positions, relative to the imaging device, of at least the three points by
- detecting the intersections of the lines in the image,
- traversing through the detected intersections to identify neighboring nodes,
- determining the identity of each detected intersection based on its color and the color of its neighboring nodes, and
- triangulating the position of intersections corresponding to the at least the three points to track the object in the scene.

A system for tracking an object in a scene, the system comprising
- a projector for projecting a structured light pattern on the scene, the structured light pattern including intersecting monochromatic lines, wherein at least six of the lines are different colors,
- an imaging device for capturing an image of the scene, including the object and the structured light pattern,
- a first processor for coordinating operation of the projector and the imaging device, and
- a second processor for calculating the positions, relative to the imaging device, of at least three points of the object by
- detecting the intersections of the lines in the image,
- traversing through the detected intersections to identify neighboring nodes,
- determining the identity of each detected intersection based on its color and the color of its neighboring nodes, and
- triangulating the position of intersections corresponding to the at least the three points to track the object in the scene.

A device for displaying contextual information on a device when the device is situated in a selected proximity to an object, the device comprising
- a projector for projecting a structured light pattern toward the object,
- an imaging device for capturing an image including the object and the structured light pattern,
- a display for displaying an image of the object and the contextual information, and
- at least one processor for a) calculating the proximity of the display device to the object and b) displaying the contextual information on the display when the device is situated within the selected proximity.
