Abstract
A pulling roll for glass manufacture made from a millboard material fired to minimize or eliminate weight loss during operation. Methods for preparing and using such a pulling roll are also disclosed.

A method of making a pulling roll, comprising the steps:
- a. firing a plurality of millboard disks at a predetermined firing temperature and time;
- b. selecting the predetermined firing temperature and time such that the disks do not undergo a weight loss from thermal perturbations of more than 5% upon exposure to an expected pulling roll operating temperature;
- and
- c. assembling the plurality of millboard disks on a pulling roll shaft to form a pulling roll.

A method of making pulling roll disks, comprising the steps:
- a. firing a plurality of millboard disks at a predetermined firing temperature and time;
- and
- b. selecting the predetermined firing temperature and time such that the disks do not undergo a weight loss from thermal perturbations of more than 5% upon exposure to an expected pulling roll operating temperature.
A method for determining a firing program for a millboard material in a pulling roll, comprising the steps:
- a. determining an operating temperature for a pulling roll comprising a millboard material;
- b. monitoring the weight of the millboard material while heating the material in a thermal profile, the profile having a profile temperature range from about ambient temperature up to at least about the operating temperature for the pulling roll;
- and
- c. determining a firing temperature and a firing time for the millboard material from the monitoring step such that the pulling roll comprising the millboard material does not undergo a weight loss from thermal perturbations of more than 5% upon exposure to the operating temperature for the pulling roll.
