Anaerobic suspended growth water treatment of contaminated water

A device to treat contaminated water, the device comprising:

• a vessel that includes a slurry of contaminated water, organic material and a mixed bacterial culture, that includes facultative bacteria and anaerobic bacteria, within an anaerobic environment,
• the mixed bacterial culture being suspended within the slurry,
• the contaminated water including contaminants associated with at least one of a non-metal, a metal, or a metalloid, and
• the organic material acting as an electron donor for the mixed bacterial culture that enables the mixed bacterial culture to react with the contaminated water to reduce or remove the contaminants from the contaminated water,
• the reducing or removing the contaminants, from the contaminated water, enabling treated water to be obtained.

A treatment system to treat contaminated water, the system comprising:

• one or more reactors, in which a respective anaerobic environment exists in each of the one or more reactors, that includes a slurry of at least contaminated water and a mixed bacterial culture that includes facultative bacteria and anaerobic bacteria,
• the mixed bacterial culture being suspended within the slurry,
• the contaminated water including contaminants associated with at least one of a non-metal, a metal, or a metalloid, and
• the mixed bacterial culture reacting with the contaminated water to reduce or remove the contaminants, from the contaminated water, to create treated slurry;
• the one or more reactors are to:
• output the treated slurry;
• and
• one or more filtration devices to:
• receive the treated slurry,
• remove, from the treated slurry, the mixed bacterial culture and the contaminants, reduced or removed from the contaminated water, to create treated water, and
• output the treated water.
