Automatic promiscuous forwarding for a bridge

A method of disabling a promiscuous mode of a network interface, the method comprising:

• identifying a plurality of local network interfaces coupled to a bridge module, wherein each local network interface of the plurality is coupled over one or more networks to one or more remote network interfaces, and
• wherein each remote network interface is assigned one or more remote network addresses, and the plurality includes a first local network interface in a promiscuous mode;
• determining whether a list of all remote network addresses that are coupled to a subset of local network interfaces of the plurality is known, wherein the subset includes the plurality of local network interfaces excluding the first local network interface;
• and
• when the list of all remote network addresses that are coupled to the subset is determined to be known, disabling the promiscuous mode of the first local network interface and adding all of the remote network addresses that are coupled to the subset to a filtering table that is coupled to the first local network interface.

A non-transitory machine-readable medium comprising a plurality of machine-readable instructions that when executed by one or more processors is adapted to cause the one or more processors to perform a method comprising:

• identifying a plurality of local network interfaces coupled to a bridge module, wherein each local network interface of the plurality is coupled over one or more networks to one or more remote network interfaces, and
• wherein each remote network interface being assigned one or more remote network addresses, and the plurality includes a first local network interface in a promiscuous mode;
• determining whether a list of all remote network addresses that are coupled to a subset of local network interfaces of the plurality is known, wherein the subset includes the plurality of local network interfaces excluding the first local network interface;
• and
• when the list of all remote network addresses that are coupled to the subset is determined to be known, disabling the promiscuous mode of the first local network interface and adding all of the remote network addresses that are coupled to the subset to a filtering table that is coupled to the first local network interface.
