Disclosed are nutritional compositions including human milk oligosaccharides that can be administered to preterm infants, term infants, toddlers, and children for improving airway defense mechanisms.

A method of improving the immune system's response to a viral infection in an infected individual, the method comprising administering to the individual a nutritional composition comprising at least one of the human milk oligosaccharides 2′-fucosyllactose and lacto-N-neotetraose.
