Abstract
Air cleaner and preferred components for an air cleaner are provided. In certain arrangements, a band is permanently mounted to the media pack, surrounding the media. Also, the cartridge is non-circular and includes a radial seal thereon.
Claims20
An air filter cartridge arrangement removeably installable in an air cleaner housing during use;
- the air filter cartridge arrangement comprising:
- (a) a media pack having:
- (i) an inlet flow end and an opposite outlet flow end;
- (ii) a plurality of inlet flow flutes open at the inlet flow end and closed to passage of air therefrom adjacent the outlet flow end;
- (iii) a plurality of outlet flow flutes closed adjacent the inlet flow end and open to outlet flow at the outlet flow end;
- and,
- (iv) a non-circular cross-sectional shape comprising an oval shape with two, opposite, straight sides and two, opposite, curved ends;
- and,
- (b) a member surrounding the media pack including at least two, spaced, radially outwardly projecting ribs thereon;
- and,
- (c) a housing seal arrangement secured to an end of the media pack and including a radially outwardly directed seal member.

An air cleaner assembly comprising:
- (a) a housing including:
- an inlet section;
- an opposite outlet section;
- and, a central main filter cartridge arrangement receiving section between the inlet section and outlet section;
- (i) the central main filter cartridge arrangement receiving section having a side access cover thereon positioned to open a service access at a location for service access to an interior of the central main cartridge arrangement receiving section;
- and,
- (ii) the access cover including an interior surface with an outwardly projecting cartridge handle recess therein;
- (b) a main air filter cartridge arrangement, including a media pack, removeably positioned within the central main filter cartridge arrangement receiving section;
- (i) the media pack having:
- (A) an oval cross-sectional shape;
- and,
- (B) a housing seal arrangement secured to the media pack;
- the housing seal arrangement comprising a seal member having a radially directed seal surface surrounding a framework;
- and
- (ii) a handle member secured to the main air filter cartridge arrangement and oriented projecting toward the outwardly projecting cartridge handle recess in the access cover;
- and,
- (iii) the main air filter cartridge arrangement being sized to fit through the service access, when the side access cover is removed.

An air filter cartridge arrangement removably installable in an air cleaner arrangement during use;
- the air filter cartridge comprising:
- (a) a media pack having:
- (i) an inlet flow end and an opposite outlet flow end;
- (ii) a plurality of inlet flow flutes open at the inlet flow end and closed to passage of air therefrom adjacent the outlet flow end;
- (iii) a plurality of outlet flow flutes closed adjacent the inlet flow end and open to outlet flow at the outlet flow end;
- and,
- (v) a non-circular cross-sectional shape comprising an oval shape with two, opposite, straight sides and two, opposite, curved ends;
- (b) a member having a portion surrounding the media pack and including at least one, outwardly projecting rib thereon;
- (i) the member also having an oval shape with a side portion including a plurality of apertures therethrough, the apertures being directed in a direction across a direction corresponding to a direction of air flow through the media pack;
- in use;
- and,
- (c) a housing seal arrangement secured to the media pack and including a radially outwardly directed seal member.

An air cleaner assembly comprising:
- (a) a housing including:
- a main filter cartridge arrangement receiving section;
- and an access cover;
- (i) the housing including an inlet and an outlet;
- and,
- (ii) the main filter cartridge arrangement receiving section including:
- opposite first and second ends;
- opposite sides;
- and, a first sidewall section extending between the opposite sides;
- a portion of the main filter cartridge arrangement receiving section that is opposite the first sidewall section being open, unless closed by the access cover;
- and,
- (b) a main filter cartridge arrangement removably positioned in the main filter cartridge arrangement receiving section between the opposite sides;
- the main filter cartridge arrangement comprising:
- (i) media having:
- (A) an inlet flow end and an opposite outlet flow end;
- (B) a plurality of inlet flutes open to inlet flow at the inlet flow end and closed to passage of unfiltered air therefrom adjacent the outlet flow end;
- and,
- (C) a plurality of outlet flow flutes closed to passage of unfiltered air therein adjacent the inlet flow end and open to passage of filtered air therefrom adjacent the outlet flow end;
- and,
- (D) an oval cross-sectional shape;
- (ii) a housing seal arrangement;
- and,
- (iii) the main filter cartridge arrangement including a first molded preform having a portion under which a portion of a person's fingers can fit, between the first molded preform portion and the media;
- (c) the main filter cartridge arrangement being positioned in the housing and being removably sealed thereto;
- (i) the main filter cartridge arrangement being oriented with:
- the inlet flow end directed toward one of the first and second ends of the main cartridge receiving section.
