Abstract
A rules engine acquires sensor data from sensors applied to the heart and determines whether an electrical waveform should be applied to the heart and, if so, the type of electrical waveform. A multi-phase cardiac stimulus generator generates waveforms in response to the rules engine. The electrical waveform is applied to one or more electrodes implanted in or on the heart.
Claims4
An apparatus for stimulating a patient's heart comprising:
- a multi-phase cardiac stimulus generator;
- one or more sensors for sensing a condition of a human heart;
- one or more electrodes implanted on, in, or proximate to at least one of an atrial chamber and a ventricular chamber of the heart;
- and
- a rules engine, wherein the rules engine comprises a processor and a memory for storing rules and receiving data from the one or more sensors, and wherein the processor is configured to perform operations comprising:
- polling the one or more sensors to obtain sensor data;
- applying the rules to the sensor data to determine whether to deliver a sub-threshold anodal electrical waveform to at least one of the one or more electrodes;
- instructing the multi-phase cardiac stimulus generator to generate the sub-threshold anodal electrical waveform when it is determined to deliver the sub-threshold anodal electrical waveform to at least one of the one or more electrodes;
- and
- delivering the sub-threshold anodal electrical waveform at a timing determined from the sensor data.
