Abstract
A simplified insulin pump allows type II diabetics to identify routine patterns in their daily lifestyle that provide a generally accurate typical pattern of activity and meals. An infusion regimen can be programmed into the pump that generally correlates with this typical pattern to provide a viable treatment option for a type II diabetic without the need for specific and precise matching of insulin to carbohydrate consumption or activity level.
Claims20
A portable insulin pump adapted to deliver insulin to a user, comprising:
- a delivery mechanism adapted to deliver insulin to a user;
- a user interface adapted to display operating parameters of the delivery mechanism and receive input from a user;
- and
- a processor coupled to the user interface and adapted to:
- receive user input data defining a meal bolus, the meal bolus comprising a recurring meal bolus of a fixed amount of insulin to be delivered at a predetermined time on at least one category of day;
- automatically provide an alert to the user through the user interface that the meal bolus is scheduled for delivery upon occurrence of the predetermined time on each day in the category;
- and
- cause the delivery mechanism to deliver the meal bolus to the user.

A portable insulin pump, comprising:
- a delivery mechanism adapted to deliver insulin to a user;
- a user interface adapted to display operating parameters of the delivery mechanism and receive input from a user;
- and
- a processor coupled to the user interface and adapted to:
- receive user input data defining a breakfast meal bolus, a lunch meal bolus and a dinner meal bolus, each meal bolus being a recurring meal bolus of a fixed amount of insulin to be delivered over a predetermined time period on at least one common category of day:
- automatically provide an alert to the user through the user interface that the breakfast meal bolus is scheduled for delivery at a beginning of the corresponding predetermined time period on a day in the common category of day;
- cause the delivery mechanism to deliver the breakfast meal bolus to the user over the corresponding predetermined time period;
- automatically provide an alert to the user through the user interface that the lunch meal bolus is scheduled for delivery at a beginning of the corresponding predetermined time period on a day in the common category of day;
- cause the delivery mechanism to deliver the lunch meal bolus to the user over the corresponding predetermined time period;
- automatically provide an alert to the user through the user interface that the dinner meal bolus is scheduled for delivery at a beginning of the corresponding predetermined time period on a day in the common category of day;
- cause the delivery mechanism to deliver the dinner meal bolus to the user over the corresponding predetermined time period.

A portable insulin pump, comprising:
- a delivery mechanism adapted to deliver insulin to a user;
- a user interface adapted to display operating parameters of the delivery mechanism and receive input from a user;
- and
- a processor coupled to the user interface and adapted to:
- store in memory a plurality of recurring meal boluses, each meal bolus comprising a fixed amount of insulin to be delivered at a predetermined time;
- associate each recurring meal bolus with at least one category of day;
- determine a category of day for a current day;
- determine one or more recurring meal boluses associated with the category of day of the current day;
- provide an alert through the user interface for each of the one or more recurring meal boluses that the meal bolus is scheduled to be delivered at the corresponding predetermined time;
- and
- cause the delivery mechanism to deliver each of the one or more meal boluses to the user.
