Abstract
A distributed computing system may allow multiple devices to distribute master node responsibilities. The various nodes in the system may be given unique, sequenced, node identifiers, and may periodically report their status to a central monitor or current master node. A comparison of the report time stamps and node identifiers, made against the node identifier of the current master node, may yield a determination as to whether the current master node should be replaced.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- receiving a plurality of node reporting messages from a plurality of nodes including a current master node;
- storing node reporting information identifying the node that sent the corresponding node reporting message, and a time stamp for the message;
- identifying a subset of the received node reporting messages that were received within a predetermined timeout period;
- receiving, from a first node, a new node reporting message;
- comparing a master node priority indication for the nodes in the subset of received node reporting messages with a master node priority indication of the first node;
- and
- using the results of the comparison to select a new master node.
4 more elements
A method comprising:
- receiving, at a first computing device, information identifying times at which a plurality of other computing devices provided status messages, and a unique node identifier (n) for each identified computing device;
- storing information identifying a time period (P);
- for each of a plurality of the computing devices:
- determining a node identifier (n);
- calculating a time value of (t) that is the determined node identifier (n) multiplied by the time period (P);
- and
- determining whether the current one of the plurality provided a status report within the time value (t) prior to a current time;
- and
- determining whether the first computing device should assume master node status over the other computing devices based on results of the calculating and determining for each of the plurality of other computing devices identified in the report.
6 more elements
A method comprising:
- determining, by a first computing device, whether it should assume master node status in a distributed node system based on time elapsed since a plurality of other nodes in the system respectively reported their statuses, wherein the determining includes using increasing time values for each successive node in the plurality of other nodes;
- and
- in response to the determining, assuming master node status in the distributed node system.
