A method of treatment or prophylaxis of a bacterial or fungal infection in a subject in need thereof, comprising:
- administering to the subject a composition comprising an effective amount of a glycerol based compound, and one or more pharmaceutical excipients, wherein the glycerol based compound is administered to the subject at a dosage of 0.0001-100 mg/kg and the glycerol-based compound consists of:
- (1) a structure selected from the group consisting of
- wherein R1 is:
- OH;
- O(CH2)9CH3;
- O(CH2)10CH3;
- O(CH2)11CH3;
- O(CH2)12CH3;
- or O(CH2)13CH3,
- R2 is:
- OH;
- O(CH2)9CH3;
- O(CH2)10CH3;
- O(CH2)11CH3;
- O(CH2)12CH3;
- or O(CH2)13CH3, and
- R3 is:
- O(CH2)9CH3;
- O(CH2)10CH3;
- O(CH2)11CH3;
- O(CH2)12CH3;
- or O(CH2)13CH3;
- or
- (2) a fatty acid ester of a glycerol molecule, wherein the alcohol group on one or both of the terminal carbon atoms of the glycerol molecule, the alcohol group on only the middle carbon atom of the glycerol molecule, the alcohol groups on the middle carbon atom and one of the terminal carbon atoms of the glycerol molecule, or the alcohol groups on all three carbon atoms of the glycerol molecule are esterified with fatty acids, wherein the fatty acids are ten carbon, eleven carbon, twelve carbon, thirteen carbon, or fourteen carbon linear alkyl fatty acids.
