In present invention provides a micro-display device having a source of illumination comprising an array of illuminating portions and an image generator arranged for receiving a signal comprising image data and comprising an array of image forming portions which may be selectively activated to project image-bearing light corresponding with the image data when illuminated by light from the source of illumination. A controller is also provided, arranged for receiving the image data and for selectively activating illuminating portions of the array of illuminating portions according to the image data and according to predetermined criteria relating to heat generation or power consumption by the micro-display device.

A method for controlling heat generation or power consumption in operation of a micro-display device, the micro-display device comprising a source of illumination having an array of separately activable illuminating portions and an image generator having an array of image forming portions which can be selectively activated to project image bearing light when illuminated by light from the source of illumination, the method comprising selectively activating illuminating portions in the source of illumination to correspond with activated image forming portions in the image generator and controlling the intensity of light emitted by the selectively activated illuminating portions according to predetermined criteria relating to heat generation or power consumption.
