Abstract
A flow battery includes at least one cell that has a first electrode, a second electrode spaced apart from the first electrode, and an electrolyte separator layer arranged between the first electrode and the second electrode. A reactant material is stored within a storage portion and selectively delivered to the at last one cell. At least one reactant material is present in a solid phase in the storage portion and is present in a liquid phase in the at least one cell.

A flow battery comprising:
- at least one cell including a first electrode, a second electrode spaced apart from the first electrode, and an electrolyte separator layer arranged between the first electrode and the second electrode;
- a storage portion fluidly connected with the at least one cell;
- and
- a reactant material stored within the storage portion and selectively delivered to the at least one cell, and the reactant material is present in a solid phase in the storage portion and is present in a liquid phase in the at least one cell.
A flow battery comprising:
- at least one cell including a first electrode, a second electrode spaced apart from the first electrode, and an electrolyte separator layer arranged between the first electrode and the second electrode;
- at least one storage portion fluidly connected with the at least one cell;
- a first reactant material stored within a first storage tank of the at least one storage portion and selectively delivered to the first electrode of the at least one cell, and the first reactant material is present in a solid phase in the at least one storage portion and is present in a liquid phase in the at least one cell;
- and
- a second, different reactant material that is either stored within a second storage tank of the at least one storage portion and selectively delivered to the second electrode of the at least one cell or circulated through the second electrode with no storage tank.
A method for operating a flow battery comprising at least one cell including a first electrode, a second electrode spaced apart from the first electrode, and an electrolyte separator layer arranged between the first electrode and the second electrode, and a storage portion for storing a reactant material, the method comprising:
- storing the reactant material in a solid phase in the storage portion;
- converting the solid phase to a liquid phase;
- and
- delivering the liquid phase to the at least one cell.
