System and method for selectively receiving required satellite television channels

A method comprising:

• receiving, by a system comprising a processor, a request to access video-on-demand content at a video-on-demand channel of a plurality of video-on-demand channels via a video-on-demand package over a broadband connection;
• determining, by the system, if a user associated with the request is authorized to receive a related broadcast package that is related to the video-on-demand package, wherein the video-on-demand content is available as broadcast content within a first broadcast channel of a plurality of broadcast channels of the related broadcast package;
• and
• authorizing, by the system, equipment of the user to receive a first broadcast channel of the plurality of broadcast channels responsive to determining that the user is not authorized to receive the related broadcast package, while blocking authorization of the user to a second broadcast channel of the plurality of broadcast channels.

A set-top box device, comprising:

• a processor;
• and
• a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:
• transmitting a request to a server to access video-on-demand content at a video-on-demand channel of a plurality of video-on-demand channels via a video-on-demand package over a broadband connection, wherein the server determines if a user associated with the request is authorized to receive a related broadcast package that is related to the video-on-demand package, wherein the video-on-demand content is available as broadcast content within a first broadcast channel of a plurality of broadcast channels of the related broadcast package;
• and
• receiving first authorization to receive a first broadcast channel of the plurality of broadcast channels responsive to the server determining that the user is not authorized to receive the related broadcast package, while the server blocks the first authorization to receive a second broadcast channel of the plurality of broadcast channels.
