Abstract
A system for performing computing operations in a data center includes one or more sets of computer systems, one or more primary power systems, and a reserve power system. The primary power systems include at least one power distribution unit that supplies power to at least one of the sets of computer systems. The reserve power system automatically supplies power to at least one of the sets of computer systems if a condition is met (such as a failure of the primary power system).

A system for supplying power, comprising:
- two or more sets of computer systems;
- one or more primary power systems coupled to, and configured to supply primary power to, the two or more sets of computer systems, wherein at least one of the one or more primary power systems comprises:
- a downstream portion configured to distribute power to the one or more sets of computer systems,
- an upstream portion configured to selectively supply primary power from one or more primary power sources to the downstream portion;
- and
- a reserve power system coupled to, and configured to automatically supply reserve power to, at least one of the two or more sets of computer systems through at least the downstream portion of the at least one primary power system, wherein the total power requirements of the two or more sets of computer systems exceed the capacity of the reserve power system to supply power;
- wherein the reserve power system is configured to selectively switch the downstream portion from distributing, to an individual set of computer systems, primary power received from the upstream portion of the at least one primary power system to distributing reserve power received from an upstream portion of the reserve power system, such that at least one other individual set of computer systems continues to receive primary power.
A system for providing reserve power to computer systems in a data center, comprising:
- a reserve power system coupled to, and configured to automatically supply power to two or more sets of computer systems each receiving power from one or more individual primary power systems if at least one condition is met, each individual primary power system comprising an upstream portion and a downstream portion, the reserve power system comprising:
- a reserve power source;
- and
- an automatic transfer switch configured to automatically switch an individual set of computer systems from receiving power from a primary power source through a downstream portion of an individual primary power system to receiving power from the reserve power source through the downstream portion of the individual primary power system, such that another individual set of computer systems continues to receive power from the primary power source through another downstream portion of another individual primary power system;
- wherein the total power requirements of the two or more sets of computer systems coupled to the reserve power system exceed a capacity of the reserve power system to supply power.
A method of supplying reserve power to computer systems in a data center, comprising:
- monitoring a primary power feed supplied to at least one set of computer systems through an upstream portion and a downstream portion of an individual primary power system, wherein the downstream portion is configured to distribute received power to the at least one set of computer systems;
- and
- in response to an at least partial failure of the primary power feed in the upstream portion of the individual primary power system, automatically switching the downstream portion of the primary power system from receiving the primary power feed from the upstream portion to receiving a reserve power feed from a reserve power system, such that the downstream portion of the individual primary power system distributes power received from the reserve power feed to the at least one set of computer systems and the upstream portion is bypassed;
- wherein the total power requirements of the one or more sets of computer systems exceed the capacity of the reserve power system to supply power.
