Abstract
The present disclosure provides an alternate technique of water detection for fuel storage tanks. Embodiments show various methods of altering the density of a sub-assembly floatation device while maintaining its efficient ability to detect water presence in conjunction with a Magnetostrictive probe. In the float's upward motion due to water or high density fuel in the tank, at some predetermined locations, its specific gravity is altered by means of strategically located free weights along its travel path.
Claims29
A water detection float adapted to work with a Magnetostrictive probe used as a tank level detector, comprising a shaft running over the entire height of the tank. The said water detection float has the following parts:
- a float sub-assembly having a protruded body interconnecting the said float to a magnet carrying collar.
- Said sub-assembly is calibrated to have a specific gravity lower than that of the lowest density aqueous liquid that may be accumulated at the bottom of the tank, but equal to that of a preselected fuel density.
- The said float sub-assembly is positioned for vertical travel along a Magnetostrictive probe;
- a fixed boot is situated at the lowest position of the said probe with the intent on being a means of support and locator for trigger weights.
- A method for establishing contact with trigger weights when predetermined distances have been travelled by the sub-assembly float. That method would thereby raise the float's natural density, whilst the newly formed float assembly is free to vertically rise and fall within the confined of the Magnetostrictive probe's shaft in excess of the first trigger point until:
- the water level is below that of said predetermined threshold, where contact between said float and said trigger weight is to be established;
- or, in the absence of water, the interface fuel has a lower density than that of said calibrated float's initial sub-assembly.
A water detection float assembly wherein, the float sub-assembly is retrofitted with a telescopic trigger weight assembly. The system is comprised of:
- a float sub-assembly having a protruded body interconnecting the said float to a magnet carrying collar.
- Internal to the body are positioned some trigger ledges intended to be used as weight lifters.
- Said sub-assembly is calibrated to have a specific gravity lower than that of the lowest density aqueous liquid that may be accumulated at the bottom of the tank, but equal to that of a preselected fuel density.
- The said float sub-assembly is positioned for vertical travel along a Magnetostrictive probe;
- a boot intended to isolate the probe's shaft from contacting the tank and serving as a locator for a telescopic trigger weight carrying apparatus.
- the water level is below that of said predetermined threshold, where contact between said float and said trigger weight is to be established;
- or, in the absence of water, the interface fuel has a lower density than that of said calibrated float's initial sub-assembly.
A water detection float assembly wherein the float sub-assembly is used in conjunction with an external trigger weight assembly. The system is comprised of:
- a float sub-assembly having a protruded body interconnecting the said float to a magnet carrying collar.
- Said sub-assembly is calibrated to have a specific gravity lower than that of the lowest density aqueous liquid that may be accumulated at the bottom of the tank, but equal to that of a preselected fuel density.
- The said float sub-assembly is positioned for vertical travel along a Magnetostrictive probe;
- a fixed boot is situated at the lowest position of the said probe with the intent on being the means of restraint for the water float.
- Located above or below the float is a weight harness composed of two independent weights joined together by a gasoline or chemically resistant flexible membrane.
- An anchor point is affixed to the Magnetostrictive probe shaft by means of a set screw.
- the water level is below that of said predetermined threshold, where contact between said float and said trigger weight is to be established;
- or, in the absence of water, the interface fuel has a lower density than that of said calibrated float's initial sub-assembly.
A water detection float assembly wherein the float sub-assembly is used in conjunction with a mixed mode trigger weight assembly. The system is comprised of:
- a float sub-assembly having a protruded body interconnecting the said float to a magnet carrying collar.
- Internal to the body are positioned some trigger points intended to be used as weight lifters.
- Said sub-assembly is calibrated to have a specific gravity lower than that of the lowest density aqueous liquid that may be accumulated at the bottom of the tank, but equal to that of a preselected fuel density.
- The said float sub-assembly is positioned for vertical travel along a Magnetostrictive probe;
- a locking ring is situated at the very end of the probe with the intent on being the means of restraint for the water float.
- Immediately above the ring is located a weight carrying fixture having a large end where a primary trigger weight is internally situated.
- The upper portion of the carrier is very narrow and is running along the probe's shaft to a termination lip where a secondary trigger weight is located externally to the float.
- the water level is below that of said predetermined threshold, where contact between said float and said trigger weight is to be established;
- or, in the absence of water, the interface fuel has a lower density than that of said calibrated float's initial sub-assembly.
