System for detection and/or analysis of nucleic acids using nanowires to detect covalent modification of nucleic acids.

A method for sequencing a nucleic acid template, the method comprising:
- forming a nanowire assembly including a semiconductor nanowire, the nucleic acid template, and a primer for the nucleic acid template;
- contacting the nanowire assembly with a first type of nucleotide;
- measuring an electrical characteristic of the nanowire assembly to determine whether the first type of nucleotide is added to the primer;
- and
- contacting the nanowire assembly with a second type of nucleotide.

A method for sequencing a nucleic acid template, the method comprising:
- forming a nanowire assembly on a semiconductor nanowire of an array of semiconductor nanowires, the nanowire assembly including a nanowire, the nucleic acid template, and a primer for the nucleic acid template;
- sequentially contacting the nanowire assembly with a plurality of types of nucleotides;
- and
- measuring an electrical characteristic of the nanowire assembly to determine whether a nucleotide of a type of nucleotide of the plurality of nucleotides is added to the primer.
