Abstract
A method and composition for hyperthermally treating tumor cells in a patient under conditions that affect tumor stem cells and tumor cells. In one embodiment, the method is administered in combination with localized internal ionizing radiation therapy.
Claims28
A method of treating a tumor at a discrete and/or metastasized site of a lesion by targeted thermotherapy, the method comprising the steps of
- (a) administering ferromagnetic nanoparticles or nanowires and positioning an electromagnet at the lesion site,
- (b) allowing elapse of a time interval sufficient to attract and concentrate a sufficient amount of nanoparticles or nanowires to the reversible electromagnet at the lesion site,
- (c) converting the electromagnet to an alternating magnet to achieve a rapidly alternating magnetic field in the ferromagnetic nanoparticles or nanowires sufficient to heat the ferromagnetic nanoparticles or nanowires to a desired temperature to effect thermotherapy at the lesion site,
- (d) recording and maintaining the desired temperature for a desired period sufficient to effect thermotherapy by a photoacoustic system communicated by a processor with the electromagnet, and
- (e) thereafter removing the electromagnet.
A method of treating a tumor in a patient, the tumor at both a discrete primary site and a metastasized site distal from the primary site containing ferromagnetic nanoparticles or nanowires, the method comprising connecting a magnetic conformer system to a system that delivers thermal energy by a processor to adjust the temperature at the primary site and the metastasized site to a predetermined level for a time and duration sufficient to effect thermotherapy at the primary site and the metastasized site.
