Abstract
An apparatus for reducing vibration includes: a damping assembly configured to be fixedly attached to a downhole component, the downhole component configured to rotate within a borehole in an earth formation, the damping assembly having a damping frequency that is tuned relative to a selected natural vibration frequency of the rotating downhole component to reduce vibration due to component rotation.
Claims24
An apparatus for reducing vibration, comprising:
- a damping assembly configured to be fixedly attached to a downhole component, the downhole component configured to rotate within a borehole in an earth formation, the damping assembly having a damping frequency that is tuned relative to a selected natural vibration frequency of the rotating downhole component to reduce vibration due to component rotation.
A method of reducing vibration, comprising:
- disposing a downhole component into a formation, the downhole component fixedly attached to a damping assembly, the downhole component configured to rotate within a borehole in an earth formation;
- performing a downhole operation that includes rotating the downhole component;
- estimating a natural vibration frequency of the rotating downhole component;
- and
- tuning, by a controller, a damping frequency of the damping assembly relative to the estimated natural vibration frequency to reduce vibration due to component rotation.
