Abstract
The present invention is a coated article containing at least two adjacent cooling holes that are substantially uncoated. In an embodiment, the coated article includes a base material, an outer surface and a coating on a portion of the outer surface. Here, the adjacent cooling holes are arranged along an axis on the outer surface and extend within the base material at an angle to the outer surface. The coating may include at least one unfinished edge oriented substantially parallel to the axis and set off at an oblique angle and a distance from the adjacent cooling holes.

A gas turbine system comprising:
- at least one compressor,
- at least one combustor,
- at least one rotating turbine stage, and
- at least one stationary turbine stage;
- wherein the at least one stationary turbine stage comprises at least one turbine nozzle comprising:
- a base material,
- an outer surface and
- a coating on a portion of the outer surface;
- wherein at least two adjacent cooling holes are arranged along an axis on the outer surface and extend within the base material at an angle to the outer surface, and
- the coating comprises at least one unfinished edge oriented substantially parallel to the axis and set off at an oblique angle and a distance from the at least two adjacent cooling holes.
A coated gas turbine component comprising:
- a base material,
- an outer surface and
- a coating on a portion of the outer surface;
- a base material,
- an outer surface and
- a coating on a portion of the outer surface;
- wherein at least two adjacent cooling holes are arranged along an axis on the outer surface and extend within the base material at an angle to the outer surface, and
- the coating comprises at least one unfinished edge oriented substantially parallel to the axis and set off at an oblique angle and a distance from the at least two adjacent cooling holes;
- which is obtainable by:
- preparing one or more mask elements substantially conforming to the contours of the outer surface and comprising:
- at least one edge oriented substantially parallel to the axis, wherein the at least one edge protrudes from the outer surface at substantially the oblique angle and extends substantially the distance from the at least two adjacent cooling holes, and
- a central portion oriented substantially parallel to the axis and raised with respect to the at least one edge,
- wherein the one or more mask elements substantially cover the at least two adjacent cooling holes;
- affixing the one or more mask elements to the outer surface;
- coating the outer surface;
- and
- removing the one or more mask elements from the outer surface.
A method for preparing a coated gas turbine component comprising the steps of:
- preparing one or more mask elements substantially conforming to the contours of the outer surface of the component and comprising:
- at least one edge oriented substantially parallel to an axis along which at least two adjacent cooling holes are arranged, wherein the at least one edge protrudes from the outer surface at an oblique angle and extends a distance from the at least two adjacent cooling holes, and
- a central portion oriented substantially parallel to the axis and raised with respect to the at least one edge,
- wherein the one or more mask elements substantially cover the at least two adjacent cooling holes;
- affixing the one or more mask elements to the outer surface;
- coating the outer surface;
- and
- removing the one or more mask elements from the outer surface.
