Abstract
Provided herein are systems and methods (i.e., utilities)that allow for synthesizing antenna patters for wireless access points that provide coverage in a wireless network. The utilities utilize various mathematical models to identify antenna settings that enhance coverage of a coverage area.
Claims27
A computer implemented method for synthesizing an antenna pattern for one or more adaptive antennas to provide coverage for a wireless network coverage area, comprising:
- generating a coverage area computer model defining a wireless coverage area and locations of at least one wireless access point for said wireless coverage area;
- processing a network performance computer model and a base antenna computer model for said wireless access point on a processing platform to determine a first network performance criteria value related to signal transfer between predetermined points in said wireless coverage area and said wireless access point of said coverage area computer model;
- iteratively adjusting at least one setting of said base antenna computer model for said wireless access point to generate a series of adjusted antenna computer models;
- iteratively reprocessing said network performance computer model and each of said series of adjusted antenna computer models to generate a series of second network performance criteria values;
- and
- resetting the base antenna computer model to an adjusted setting that produced one second network performance criteria value that is greater than the first network performance criteria.

A system for synthesizing an antenna pattern for one or more adaptive antennas to provide coverage for a wireless network coverage area, comprising:
- at least one processor;
- and
- a memory having computer readable code stored thereon operative to cause the at least one processor to perform the following steps:
- receive inputs for use in generating a coverage area model defining a wireless coverage area and locations of at least one wireless access point for said wireless coverage area;
- process a network performance model and a base antenna model for said wireless access point to determine a first network performance criteria value related to signal transfer between predetermined points in said wireless coverage area and said wireless access point of said coverage area model;
- iteratively adjust at least one setting of said base antenna model for said wireless access point to generate a series of adjusted antenna models;
- iteratively reprocess said network performance model and each of said series of adjusted antenna models to generate a series of second network performance criteria values;
- and
- reset the base antenna computer model to an adjusted setting that produced one second network performance criteria value that is greater than the first network performance criteria.
A computer implemented method for synthesizing antenna patterns for adaptive antennas to provide coverage for a wireless network coverage area, comprising:
- receiving inputs defining a wireless network coverage area and locations of at least first and second wireless access point for said wireless coverage area;
- dividing the wireless network coverage into multiple sub-areas and assigning a first plurality of said sub-areas to said first wireless access point to define a first coverage sub-area and assigning a second plurality of said sub-areas to said second wireless access point to define a second coverage sub-area;
- and
- synthesizing a first antenna beam pattern for said first coverage sub-area, wherein said first antenna beam pattern is adapted for implementation with a first antenna associated with said first wireless access point.
