Abstract
Some embodiments provided herein relate to bioluminescent packaging, methods of making, and methods of sensing the state of a material, in some embodiments, light emitted by a bioluminescent organism can be used to sense the state of a material.

A bioluminescent packaging comprising:
- a matrix;
- and
- a population of one or more bioluminescent organisms, wherein the population of bioluminescent organisms is configured to emit light which corresponds a state of a material, and wherein the population comprises a quantity of bioluminescent organisms sufficient to emit an observable light signal.

A method of sensing a state of a material, the method comprising:
- providing a material;
- providing a packaging comprising at least one bioluminescent organism, wherein the bioluminescent organism conditionally emits light based upon a state of an environment proximal to the bioluminescent organism;
- placing the material proximal to the environment of the bioluminescent organism;
- and
- detecting the presence or absence of light emitted by the at least one bioluminescent organism, thereby sensing a state of the material.

A method of manufacturing a bioluminescent package, the method comprising:
- providing at least one bioluminescent organism;
- providing a matrix;
- and
- combining the at least one bioluminescent organism with the matrix, thereby producing a bioluminescent package.
