A method for operating an electric machine (100) for starting an internal combustion engine, the machine comprising a housing (10) having at least one sealing device (14) which seals an interior (10a) of the housing with respect to the surroundings of the housing (10), and at least one pressure reduction device (1), wherein a change in pressure owing to operation takes place in the interior (10a) of the housing, the method comprising carrying out a translatory movement of the at least one pressure reduction device (1) relative to the at least one sealing device (14) in order to at least partially reduce an overpressure in the interior (10a) of the housing.
